I make hibiscus lemonade like it’s going out of style and judging by this post’s title, I’m sure you can guess what I do with the steeped and strained hibiscus flower petals!
The flower is a bit sour and even has a slightly sour smell so this flower may not be a huge hit among your barnyard fowl, but it’s health benefits make it worth a try. Especially if the flower petals would otherwise end up in the trash after use.

The health benefits of hibiscus include relief from high blood pressure and high cholesterol, improved digestion, immune system support and anti-inflammatory properties. Hibiscus also helps cure liver disease and reduces the risk of cancer. It can speed up the metabolism and help in healthy, gradual weight loss. Plus, it’s known to help with hypertension and anxiety. Hibiscus tea is rich in vitamin C, minerals and antioxidants.
While these benefits have been documented in people, the same nutrients we need to thrive are comparable to what our chickens, ducks, geese, and so on, need as well.
So, while I’ve never had a depressed chicken, I’m all about boosting my birds’ immune systems!
Feeding chickens and ducks hibiscus flower petals is safe and nutritious. If you don’t want to buy dried petals, the plant makes a great privacy hedge or decorative garden plant. Here in Florida, we have hibiscus everywhere and I’ll never forget my childhood chore of sweeping the dropped flowers off our sidewalk leading up to our front door.
